Thanks to a $200,000 seed grant from Tennis Canada and Rogers, our municipality of Chatham-Kent is close to realizing the dream of an indoor tennis dome on the outskirts of Chatham. Mayor Canniff said in his latest press release said that this grant will go a long way in our growing community and provide another venue for CK residents to have fun, learn new skills and live more healthy and active lifestyles.
Last year council voted to commit up to $2 million to develop a regional park on Bear Line Rd. The, close to 20 acres of land, was donated by St. Clair College. The first phase of the project involves working with Tennis Clubs of Canada (TCC) to build the dome. A lot of work has gone into qualifying for this grant. TCC will own, operate and incur all cost associated with the dome. Having an indoor facility will certainly go a long way in building interest in this sport in our community. Ground breaking is scheduled for later in February.
The program is in its third year and expanded to six facilities from the usual four who qualify for the grant each year. The $5.6 million initiative’s aim is to build 160 year-round courts at as many as 30 facilities across the country by 2029. This year’s recipients include Niagara, Mississauga, St. Catherines and L’lle-Bizard, Quebec.
