16th Annual Chatham-Kent Retrofest was a Huge Success!
This years 16th Annual Retrofest 2018 began with the OLG Classic Car Cruise on Friday evening May 25/2017. The cars assembled at the Bradley Centre on Richmond St. at 4 P.M. and left for the Parade route at 6 P.M. It was hot, sunny and beautiful evening for the event. My wife and I walked around the parking lot at the Bradley Centre, enjoying the cars and talking to the owners. We had a ringside seat for the start of the parade as the cars filed out onto Richmond St. Last year there were over 700 Classic Cars and it seemed there were even more this year. The Parade Route was different this year and there were signs to direct the participants. Those lucky enough to live along the parade route often host a barbeque for family and friends. It is such a fun evening. The cars proceed to Historic Downtown Chatham's King St. where some cruise the drag and then park to enjoy the many downtown pubs and restaurants.
These special automobiles started to line up on Chatham's Historic King St. Saturday morning as early as 5 A.M. to get the prime parking places. Festivities on the street and in Tecumseh Park were scheduled from 9 A.M. until 5 P.M. The whole downtown was a real hub-bub of activity. It is always so nice to see people turn out in such great numbers for this special Annual Classic Car Event and the first of many in Chatham-Kent for this summer. Visitors are able to get a close up look at these special cars dating back to 1990 and earlier and talk to the proud owners who are morethanwilling to share the history of their prize possessions. There was entertainment and food on the street. Tecumseh Park was crowded as there are many activities for the children. The many merchandise and food vendors were busy. If for some reason, you missed this year, make sure you clear your calendar for next year. You won’t be disappointed.
Remember, Chatham-Kent is host to many Classic Car Events each summer. 2015 was the 100th Anniversary of the Gray -Dort Automobile and one weekend showcased these fine automobiles. We even had overseas guests. These Classic Cars were manufactured here in Chatham from 1915-1925. During that time 26,000 vehicles came off the line and the 1919 Gray-Dort Touring Car has been named a NationalTreasure of Canada. The Company was the brain child of William Gray of Chatham and his partner J. Dallas Dort of Flint Michigan.
One of Chatham-Kent's Newer Classic Car Events is Carsand Coffee at RM Restoration just outside of Chatham.
