March Break Family Adventures in Chatham-Kent

March break is underway and although there are a lot of families that head south for the holidays, some of us stay home. Why not plan a day or two exploring our own area with the family. They will love it! There is so much to see and do. I am always posting about what is going on in Chatham-Kent but I realize that some residents are unaware of all the Historical Treasures we have right here in our own backyard.
As you probably know Chatham-Kent is steeped in Black history. Visit some of our great area museums and Historical Sites.  Take the family to the Buxton National Historic Site. Ring the Liberty Bell and relive the epic story of how former black slaves found freedom in Chatham-Kent. Walk the original grounds with the last standing schoolhouses, an original log cabin from 1852, a barn and so much more. Self-guided tours are offered by descendents of the first settlers.
Visit the CK Black Historical Society and Black Mecca Museum. Experience the journey of Chatham’s Black community from the end of the 18th century to present day. Enjoy the exhibits, artifacts and extensive articles introducing you to important figures in our great history. Learn their stories in interactive ways.
Stop by the Cultural Centre and visit the newest addition on the 2nd floor of the museum. The museum showcases artifacts of national and international significance like the War of 1812, the Underground Railroad and the global discovery of oil.
Don’t forget the Josiah Henson site near Dresden. This site recognizes the accomplishments of Josiah Henson through interpretive videos, interactive exhibits and numerous artifacts reflecting the Black experience in Canada.
So much to see and do and right here in our own backyard. Plan your days and check out the CK Tourism site for site openings. There is even a Bakery Tour on-line with places to rest along your journey and enjoy some local treats. As I always say " IT IS ALL HERE ALL YEAR!"  Enjoy your holiday!
